ClassGraphic This class focuses on contemporary art practices using a photographic medium instead of traditional photography. Students will create work that draws upon contemporary art directions that are redefining the field—using lenses, scanners, and digital and analog processes; printing on alternative materials; and presenting images as still or moving pictures or even 3-D objects. We will look at how artists have utilized lens-based image-making in the age of digital technology and the Internet—investigating virtual and real, abstract and representational, and new forms of mixed media. Class consists of weekly assignments, critiques, visiting artists’ talks, and surveys of various artists. This class is taught through a conceptual framework; technical instruction not included. Students should be at an intermediate to advanced level and engaged in a photo-based art-making practice. Class listing image: Matthew Brandt ("Water & Polaroid") & Mariah Robertson ("Let's Change")
