Explore the world of erasure, a genre of book art created by erasing found texts. Newspaper clippings, book pages, and any text new or old can serve as the basis for re-routing language and image into art. Develop your own visual tool kit by using elements of paper cutting, pen and ink, collage, and unique media (like Wite-Out or metal leaf) in unexpected ways. We will also investigate the lineage of erased art from Robert Rauschenberg to Yoko Ono. This class blends the visual and literary and is open to artists and writers of all levels. *Reduced tuition available for students of writing and visual art programs at UT Austin, St. Edwards, Texas State, and other universities. Please call 512 323 6380 for more information.

Functional and fun! Learn to create great pouring pots (known as “cruets”): an oil and vinegar set, a soy sauce drizzler, or any spouted vessel for a favorite liquid condiment to add an interesting accent to the table. Using wheel-thrown parts that are then handbuilt together, students will discover versatile ways to approach the cruet form. Demonstrations will include throwing off the hump and creating a custom trimming chuck for rounded pots. Surface decoration and design will be discussed with examples of finished cruets. Basic wheel-throwing skills needed; students may leave their greenware to be bisque fired at the Art School.

Select a single object as your subject matter, preferably from nature, and small enough to fit in your hand. From this source, you will begin a series of small realistic pencil works. Through modulation and shifts in orientation and scale, you’ll use these works as a starting point to create a large-scale exploratory charcoal drawing full of gesture, movement, space, and energy.
