This class covers the fundamentals of woodworking, focusing on the properties of wood, wood selection, project planning, joinery, and finishes. Students can expect to leave class with a completed piece (past projects include a toolbox and a side table built out of solid wood). No experience is necessary, but students must be comfortable learning to use hand and machine tools, including a table saw, band saw, jointer, planer, and router, with instruction on safety and proper usage.

Working from simple positives (the original form of the desired casting), students learn one- and twopart sand molds, principles of furnace design, safe casting procedures, and metal finishing techniques. Students create at least one completed cast sculpture in aluminum.
