This class covers the fundamentals of woodworking, focusing on the properties of wood, wood selection, project planning, joinery, and nishes. Past projects have included toolboxes, side tables, and stools, all built out of solid wood. No experience is necessary, but students must be comfortable learning to use hand and machine tools, including a table saw, band saw, jointer, planer, and router, with instruction on safety and proper usage.

Learn metal casting—used by sculptors for 7,000 years—through this introduction to foundry and mold-making practices. Working from simple positives (the original form of the desired casting), students learn one-and two-part sand molds, principles of furnace design, safe casting procedures, and metal finishing techniques. Students create at least one completed cast sculpture in aluminum (included in course) or bronze (for a small additional cost).

This introduction to 2-D and 3-D digital drawing and computer-aided fabrication covers the basics of digital drawing and prototyping and familiarizes students with Autodesk programs: AutoCAD, 123D Design, and 123D Make. Utilize digital drafting and laser-cutter technology to create 3-D, real-world prototypes of your designs. Three projects introduce students to prototyping, digital drawing, materials, and construction techniques as a way to transform ideas into real objects.

This class covers the fundamentals of woodworking through the conception and creation of a decorative wood flower vase with optional resin inlay. Learn the general properties of wood, proper and safe usage of hand and power tools, clamping, gluing, veneering, sanding, oil finishing, and more. No experience is necessary but students should be comfortable learning to use hand and power tools, including the jointer, planer, table saw, miter saw, band saw, routers, and sanders. Though there will be a basic vase design to work from, students will be encouraged and guided in expressing their own creative voice.
